Private First Class Clayton C. Hayes of Fox Company, 505th Infantry Regiment helps Normandy residents, Madame Digeon and Jacques Birette, with their luggage along the Route de Chef-du-Pont on the outskirts of St-Mère-Église on June 8, 1944. Hayes would die in combat in Holland on September 20, 1944, during Operation Market Garden. (NARA 111-SC-190287)

An Explanation
“Hermes” is the Greek patron God of writers (among other things). “Chindit” is an English corruption of the Burmese word Chinthe, describing a mythical lion which became the symbol of a British-Allied special forces group during the Second World War.
